Volunteer Information Guide

Volunteering under
NHB-MOE's Heritage Badge Programme

  1. Students are required to fill in the particulars of your Uniformed Group (UG) and the UG Teacher In-charge when you apply online as a volunteer. Your teacher will be notified of your application for volunteering, so ensure that your teacher's email is valid.
  2. Students need to fulfill a minimum of 8 volunteer hours and write a reflection journal in order to obtain the badge.
  3. Endorsement Form
    A form will be issued to you during your SHF training and volunteer sessions, which you need to obtain verification and endorsement on your volunteer hours from the hub manager. Upon endorsement you can present this form to your respective UG teachers-in-charge as proof of volunteer hours.
  4. Reflection Journal
    As a form of assessment for the NHB-MOE's Heritage Badge Scheme, students are required to write a 200-word reflection inclusive of pictures on the key learning points during their volunteer stint at SHF 2010. You can write your reflection journal here. Upon your online submission, your teacher will be notified of your submission via email. So make sure that your teacher's email is valid.

Volunteering under
Community Involvement Programme

  1. Volunteering under Community Involvement Programme (CIP) indicates that you would like to use volunteer hours from the festival as part of your CIP. Please note that this does not mean that the volunteer hours for the festival is automatically considered as part of CIP. You will still need to check with your teacher-in-charge of CIP for his/her approval if they can be considered as your CIP hours.
  2. Students are required to fill in the particulars of your teacher-in-charge of CIP programmes. Your teacher will be notified of your application for volunteering, so please ensure that your teacher's email is valid.
  3. Endorsement Form
    A form will be issued to you during your SHF training and volunteer sessions, which you will need to obtain verification and endorsement of your volunteer hours from the Festival Hub manager. After that, you can present this endorsement form to your teacher-in-charge of CIP as proof of your volunteer hours.

Roles of Volunteers

Community Exhibition Facilitators
  1. Gain an understanding of the particular community group that has been assigned by going through the content on the text panels as well as conducting self study/research
  2. Perform the role of exhibition facilitators/explainers during the exhibition by providing visitors with information about the community groups represented at the exhibition
  3. Assist community groups/NHB in dressing up the booths in a manner that best reflects the spirit of the community as well as the text panels that are presented to the visitors
  4. Assist community groups/NHB to ensure that artefacts are taken care of during the exhibition as well as to distribute any freebies to visitors that visit the exhibition
Exhibition Facilitators
  1. Gain an understanding of the particular exhibition that has been assigned by going through the content on the text panels as well as conducting self study/research
  2. Guide visitors through the exhibition and perform the role of exhibition facilitators/explainers during the exhibition by providing visitors with information presented at the exhibition
  3. Assist hub managers to ensure that artefacts are taken care of during the exhibition as well as to distribute any freebies to visitors that visit the exhibition
  4. Report and incidents or accidents that happen during the exhibition and ensure that the appropriate persons in-charge takes over the management of the situation (i.e. vandalism)
SMU Campus Green - Festival Finale Ambassadors
  1. Manage the information booth by providing visitors with details of the finale programme and providing assistance at the lost and found counter
  2. Rove around the finale grounds and perform the role of greeters and ambassadors
    • Provide information/details of the programme to visitors as well as to give directions to visitors to are lost and bring them to the appropriate venues
    • Assist/report any ad-hoc situations on the grounds and ensure that the appropriate persons in-charge takes over the management of the situation (i.e. lost child, accidents etc.)
    • Enliven the experience of visitors by fostering a carnival feel throughout the duration of the finale
      • Greetings
      • Distribution of balloons
      • Ad-hoc performances
