Special Exhibitions Gallery, Asian Civilisations Museum
Take a step back in time as ACM explores the history of early collectors through a range of artefacts including indigenous handicrafts, weaponry and other ethnographic materials. Acquired by or donated to the old Raffles Library and Museum, these artefacts later formed the core of the Southeast Asian collection in the ACM.
Discover the stories behind these artefacts as told by the early collectors themselves, who were instrumental to the early growth of the museum collection. They provide insights into colonial culture of the time and the relationship between collectors and the museum at the turn of the 19th century in Southeast Asia.
19 June – 19 July 2009 (Free admission)
Shaw Foundation Foyer, Asian Civilisations Museum
Universally recognised as one of today's finest image-makers, Steve McCurry captures the essence of human struggle and joy in his photography. Month of Photography Asia and the Asian Civilisations Museum are pleased to present a solo exhibition by the internationally renowned photographer.
The winner of many of photography's top awards, McCurry’s career was launched when he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion. When he emerged, he had rolls of film sewn into his clothes and images that would be published around the world as among the first to show the conflict there.
This exhibition will be Steve McCurry’s first in Singapore. It will feature his new works on Asia and will also include his older iconic and critically acclaimed photographs such as the “Afghan Girl” - described as one of the most recognisable photographs in the world.
Get an insight into the mind of McCurry, as immortalised through this selection of photographs that cross the boundaries of language and culture.
