Singapore History Gallery

Ongoing, 10am – 6pm daily (Admission charges apply)

Explore Singapore's history from the 14th century to the modern period in this 2,800 square metre gallery.

The Singapore History Gallery adopts a story-telling approach, unveiling different perspectives as you travel through tales of the past. To let you appreciate the struggles that early settlers had to overcome, we will take you through the drama of major national events as well as the personal stories of individuals.

You can select your own 'path' into the past. The events path traces the major events and characters that were part of Singapore's history, while the personal path tells the stories through the eyes of the man on the street. With our audio-visual companion that comes in four different languages, listen to interesting insights and quips of your choice to complete this refreshing and enriching journey.

Singapore Living Galleries

Ongoing, 10am – 8pm daily (Admission charges apply. Free admission from 6pm – 8pm daily.)

Celebrate the creativity of the Singapore society through time in the four Singapore Living Galleries, each with a lifestyle theme close to the hearts of Singaporeans.

Food - Eating on the Street

Feel the vibrancy of Singapore's street life from the 1950s to 1970s as you immerse yourself in this display of food-related artefacts and sound installations. Listen to the voices and discover how street food reflects the ethnic diversity, cross-cultural exchanges and cultural innovations of Singapore.

Fashion - Shopping for Identity

Explore the shifting identities of women in Singapore from the 1950s to 1970s. In this gallery, you will learn about the changing social, economic and political roles of women. Look out for a 'making of' set from a textile factory, feel the selection of fabrics on display, admire the intricacies of the embroidery found on a kebaya and learn different ways of draping a sari.

Film & Wayang - Scripting a New Life

You are in for a visual treat in the Film gallery. View a selection of Chinese opera costumes, rare entertainment magazines and movie paraphernalia, and watch excerpts of early iconic films. You will also be able to trace the development of Chinese opera and the emergence of home-grown films as popular entertainment in Singapore.

Photography - Framing the Family

Photography operates at the junction between personal memory and social history. Peer into 100 years of history of the Singaporean family in this exhibition as it offers you glimpses into local life through photographic images and precious personal artefacts.
